Beginners Course

This one-day course covers all the basics you need to start European honey bee beekeeping in your backyard or farm. Included in the course is all the basic information you need to get started on the journey to harvesting your own honey. The course includes both classroom and apiary sessions, ending with a harvest of honey right from the hive.

Topics covered:

  • Native bees, European honey bees - which are best for you?

  • What sort of hive to buy

  • How to source your bees

  • What’s going on inside the hive, what are all those bees up to?

  • What is honey and when do I harvest it?

  • Inspecting a hive - opening it and doing a guided inspection

  • How do I keep my hive healthy, what’s the commitment?

  • Pest and diseases and how to manage them

  • Where to put your hive and how to move it

  • Registering, insurance and other paperwork.

Advanced beekeeping and Varroa management course

The aim of my half-day advanced beekeeping course is for you to gain a better knowledge of European honey bees and the methods of keeping them in an urban environment, building on your existing experience. The course is best for participants who have completed a beginners’ course.

​The course will cover advanced topics including:

  • Queen locating techniques

  • Marking Queens

  • Managing Varroa mite 

  • Dealing with cross-combed hives

  • Swarm prevention

  • Re-queening and how you do it

  • Splitting hives and joining hives

  • Moving hives

  • Dealing with grumpy bees
